We headed out at 5:30 in the morning to make the drive over rough and rutted roads so we could catch the sun rising over the mountains on the Powderhorn Ranch just outside Douglas, Wyoming and it was worth it!
The working cowgirls and cowboys were bringing this herd of geldings from the far end of the pasture so we could photograph them. When we realized there would be a water crossing on the way, a few of us who were attending the Equine Photographers Network (EPN for short) 2019 Powderhorn Women's Retreat scrabbled down the slope for a closer overhead view of the crossing. I have a number of images of horses crossing the water from my 5 days on the ranch, but this is one of my favorites so thought it perfect to share for this week's theme of "water" in the Pet Photography 52 Week Project.
Spending a week on the ranch, with no cell service (who needs it when you're surrounded by this kind of beauty?) and experiencing the wonderful hospitality of the True Family, was an experience of a lifetime. I made new friends with the other photographers and have almost 5,000 images to pore through and share over the coming months.
I titled this blog with the old cliche, because even though the boys were led to the water, a number of them did in fact take a drink as evidenced by the buckskin in the right of the frame.
