New Year, New Studio Space

Hard to believe that we're almost through the first quarter of 2021! Where have these three months gone? I know exactly where they've gone for me; I moved the studio in January and holy cow was that a project! I'm still located in historic downtown Carrollton, Texas and gained another 400 square feet space in the process.

Even though the move was just a mile away from my former location, it still required packing up and moving a lot of big, bulky lighting equipment, tons of props and all the accoutrements like samples and packaging.

Carrollton Photography Studio

Lucky for me, I have a very handy husband who helped me prep the new location with some general repairs and a fresh coat of paint before I moved in. I gained an additional 400 sq ft of space in the camera room and am positively giddy with the extra room. Many of my images require four and five light set ups and the secret to all those group puppy pictures? Assistants! Now there's room to spare for all of this!

I not only photograph pets and their people, I also photograph families, high school seniors and corporate headshots along with regular editorial work for local publications. I just love to create images, no matter the subject. I recently finished an interesting book that really resonated with me; Range by David Epstein. There's been so much written lately about the 10,000 hours of practice theorem, and that certainly holds true in a number of cases, but don't discount the generalist.

Epstein writes on how keeping a broad range of interests, experimenting and changing course every now and then are essential to finding your true passions — and the success that comes with loving what you do. That's me. All my photographic interests inform every image I make, from documentary style, photo journalism to portrait work - it all makes me a better photographer.

It wasn't just the move, it was also the unpacking, organizing, culling of no longer used props and - cue husband to the rescue again - the installation of my larger paper roller system in the camera room.

Have you ever set up a soft box? Every photographer will tell you that we hate it. We want to set them up once and leave them, but they also take up a lot of room. One of my favorite things about the new studio is the "hanging wall" for softboxes and some of my prop chairs. Oh joy!

Behind the scenes; props, packaging and more...

Artwork samples are an important part of the studio. I guarantee satisfaction with all print work and being able to see, touch and feel wall art or an album eliminates uncertainty when selecting how you want to enjoy your images. I include free delivery and hanging of your artwork with every portrait session.

This week's theme in the Pet Photography 52 Week Project is "self portrait". I finally have the new studio space looking the way I want it so figured this would be a good time to share the news and a look inside, complete with a self portrait of me in there (note the long shutter release cable in my left hand)!

I can't wait to "see" my fellow pet photographers this week, many of whom I feel I know from reading their blogs every week, first up is Nancy at Nancy Kieffer Photography offering pet portraits in Central New York, the Adirondacks and beyond and then continue clicking on the link at the bottom of each post for this week's meet and greet of some fantastic pet photographers.
