Photographing Puppies, A Throughly Enjoyable Sh*t Show

Photographing puppies is one of the true joys of my job. Finding volunteers to help with puppy sessions in my Carrollton, Texas studio usually isn't a problem. I'll put word out that a litter of puppies are coming into the studio and I need some extra hands and I'll usually come up with one, or two, or three folks to help out the rescue group or breeder.

Extra hands is the key to photographing puppies - especially the group images - because it's a sh*t show. You really have no idea what it's like until you've sat in on one. That being said, it's the best show around! There's always laughter, oohs and ahhs and even some breath holding. My "go-to" helpers say it's the best part of their week and love hearing from me. Newbies ask "when's the next litter coming in, just let me know and I'm here".

The image below is what you're used to seeing on my website, Facebook page and Instagram feed but scroll down a little and you'll see what so many of the rest of the pictures look like!

This Is What The Majority Of A Puppy Photo Session Looks Like Behind The Scenes

This week's theme in my pet photography blog circle is "the moments in between". I'll always look to capture sweet, unaware moments during a  pet portrait session but with COVID raging again I figured we could all use a laugh so decided to focus on the crazy that goes on behind the scenes of a puppy session. Those images that end up "on the cutting room floor" as it were. Case in point, this litter of pointer puppies that came into the studio from Texas Sporting Breed Rescue here in the Dallas area. My friend Debbie (a stellar puppy wrangler) is fostering two of them and asked if I'd be up for taking pictures of all six to help out the rescue - uh, yeah; enjoy!

Pulling Gems From The Rubble

One hour, six puppies, over four hundred photos by the time we were through. Now to cull through and pull the best three to five of each puppy and one each of the pairs in the chair images to send to Texas Sporting Breed Rescue to help these little nuggets get adopted. Below is a little sneak peak of some of the winners. If you live in the Dallas - Fort Worth metroplex and are looking for a forever friend, contact them to learn how you can submit an application to adopt.

All Around The Circle

Now for some funny and heartwarming in between moments from the other photographers in the circle starting with Nancy of Nancy Kieffer Photography of Syracuse shares the silly, fun and heartwarming moments that happen while the camera is still snapping and then keep clicking on the link at the bottom of each post for an around the world tour of stunning pet photography.
