The Joy and Sadness of Senior and End-of-Life Pet Photography Sessions

Oct 8, 2021 | By: Tracy Allard

It's hard to see your beloved pet get old. To slow down. To no longer be able to jump up on the bed or maybe start to loose their eyesight, or hearing. The one great fault of our pets is that they're never with us long enough, that's why I think it's incredibly important to photograph your pets while you still have them with you and create memories that will last a life time and will bring you solace after they're gone.

I created Silver Sessions to honor the silver and gray muzzles in our lives. Whether your pet is simply aging, or perhaps you recently received a diagnosis that will limit the time you have left with them - don't wait. DON'T WAIT. Tomorrow is never guaranteed. You want to remember your dog as they always were, not near the end when they're a shadow of their former selves.

Silver Sessions are especially geared toward keeping your elder pet comfortable so are often held at your home or a familiar, nearby park, or in the quiet, air conditioned comfort of my studio in historic Old Town Carrollton.

We take things easy; no hurrying and we don't ask your pet to do anything that might cause stress. The goal is make lasting memories that you can enjoy for the rest of your life. I want to capture that silly look that melts your heart, or the way you always cuddle when you come home from work or the way they close their eyes in total bliss when you scratch "that spot".

Some Of The Silver Session Pets I've Been Honored To Photograph

Silver Sessions are a mixture of joy and sadness; joy for the love you have for your pet and sadness knowing that your time with them is waning. I have shed tears along with my clients knowing that their dog or cat would soon be crossing the Rainbow Bridge. I have loved getting kisses and nose bumps from seniors who just want to enjoy the good things in life; a scratch and a snack. I adore hearing about all the silly things they do, how they totally operate you to get the best spot in the bed or to have you throw the ball just one more time. I believe in love at first sight because I fall in love with every dog (and cat) I've ever met and consider myself incredibly lucky to be able to give such a gift to these pet parents.

Remembering Dingo

We recently lost our sweet boy Dingo. He was diagnosed with lymphoma in August of 2019 and put up a good fight until June 2020 when we made the decision to let him go in peace before the bad days outnumbered the good. Upon receiving his diagnosis, our first call was to the oncologist and the second was to a wonderful photographer friend of mine to schedule updated family pictures.

I have lots of pictures of Dingo, but not with me and I wanted to always remember the way I would kiss the brown spot on the side of his face that I called "the kissing spot" which was usually met with a stoic expression that my husband would interpret for Dingo by voicing "That's too close Mom".  This picture is from September, months before we lost him and he looked like himself and made the face that I knew so well when I pulled him in for a smooch (but he always tolerated for me).

In the weeks after we lost him, my husband and I found ourselves revisiting the pictures that Sylvia took of us over and over again. Sometimes we'd smile. Sometimes we'd cry, but we were ever so thankful to have them and they made us feel better.

I made the mistake with Penny, our first dog together (and Penny Whistle's namesake), never having her professionally photographed so all we have of her are a handful of snapshots. I promised myself that would never happen again so every couple of years we get new family portraits taken so we have pictures of us with our dogs, something that even as a professional pet photographer I can't do. Don't make the same mistake I did. I've never had a client tell me they regretted scheduling a portrait session, only that they regretted waiting too long and missing the opportunity to do so.

All Around The Circle

I know other pet photographers agree with the meaningfulness of photographing older or ill pets so I'm keen to read about what they value most about the experience of working with these special clients. Let's check in with Seattle dog photographer Holly Cook who talks about a very special portrait experience and why she believes that capturing your pet's portraits are so important, then click on the link at the bottom of each post for an around-the-world tour of some stunning and memorable pet photography.

Tracy Allard of Penny Whistle Photography is a Certified Professional Photographer with the organization Professional Photographers of America; a designation held by fewer than 2,000 photographers nationwide and a hallmark of consistency, technical skill, artistry and professionalism. Tracy and her family recently lost a very special dog of their own, Dingo, their sweet old man of over 14 years who valiantly fought a battle with lymphoma but succumbed to it in June of this year. When he was diagnosed, the first phone call was to the oncologist and the second was to a photographer friend for updated family pictures while he was still looking happy and healthy.

Penny Whistle specializes in both on-location and studio photography providing pet, equine, family, couples & engagement and high school senior portraits as well as corporate headshots and commercial photography services in her studio located in historic downtown Carrollton as well as on location in Coppell, Grapevine, Southlake, Flower Mound and surrounding communities in Dallas – Fort Worth, Texas.
