From the Studio to Natural Light

Dec 6, 2019 | By: Tracy Allard

I recently had the opportunity to photograph a litter of ADORABLE border collie puppies, the "Saved by the Bell" litter bred by Emily Hurt of EmDogs Agility. We had so much fun in the studio that when I saw the weather report for seventy degrees and sunny just four days later I decided to head up to Sherman, Texas to photograph these little busy bodies on their farm as well.

Emily said that all the leaves were falling off the trees and they had piles of them, this got my creative juices flowing. I wanted to capture all the action so a fast shutter speed was in order and we had a gorgeous morning with beautiful natural light just slightly diffused by some thin, hazy clouds. I love the contrast of the black and white dogs with the colorful autumn leaves.

Puppy breath, beautiful weather and my camera; it was heaven on earth for me. So now, without further ado, let me introduce you to the kids in the class!

So which do you prefer; the studio lit images or those photographed with natural light? Very different indeed and I do love the minimalist esthetic of the black and white puppies on the white background, but then again the warm golden light and colorful leaves are pretty hard to beat. I can't choose, I love them both. All this brings me to the topic of this week's Pet Photography 52 Week Challenge and the theme, "light". Having just photographed these little tykes less than 2 weeks ago in both the studio and then outdoors in natural light, I was excited to share the images for this week's blog post.

Now on to Elaine Tweedy of I Got the Shot Photography, serving pets and their people in Northeastern PA and surrounding areas to see what she has to share for the topic of "light" and then continue clicking on the link at the bottom of each post for an around the world tour of enlightening pet photography!
